Event overview and main themes

On June 16th 2020, the Microsoft European Virtual Open Source Summit will be the occasion to meet and hear from all the communities, entrepreneurs and developers involved in building the future of open source technologies in the cloud.

This is an opportunity to explore all the areas where Microsoft and Canonical collaborate to spread the use of open source in the public cloud. From existing popular solutions drive rapid development and low-cost production :

  • Ubuntu on Azure: the most popular Linux in the public cloud and its optimisation for Azure
  • Cloud-init: The standard for customising cloud instances which automates the provisioning of an operating system image into a fully running state

To new solutions released in 2020, from cloud images and Kubernetes to desktop developer tools:

  • Ubuntu Pro for Azure: a premium image designed by Canonical offered through the Azure Marketplace, including subscription to Canonical’s critical security and compliance services by default — with no contract necessary.
  • Azure Arc for multi-cloud: A single pane of glass from a private cloud on Charmed Kubernetes to public cloud with Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS) – where Ubuntu is already the default OS.
  • Ubuntu on WSL: a complete Ubuntu terminal environment installed in minutes on Windows 10, to access the Linux terminal on Windows, develop cross-platform applications, and manage IT infrastructure without leaving Windows.
  • MicroK8s on Windows: The new installer for Windows is a standalone executable file, that lets you install a conformant upstream Kubernetes, in one install.

Presentation: Building on open source with Ubuntu Pro for Azure

On the agenda, over 30 open source talks and at 15:15 CET Christian Reis, VP Public Cloud, Canonical, will be speaking about using open source with Ubuntu Pro for Azure for improved Economics, Velocity and Security. Here is the abstract:

Every day, organizations of all kinds and sizes choose to harness open source innovation as part of their development and operations. Many have embraced Linux, Docker and Kubernetes and are now adopting open source beyond the infrastructure layer, as evidenced by the widespread adoption of ecosystems like Python, Node.js and Go, and workloads like Kafka, Redis and Elasticsearch. From retailers to financial services enterprises running on Microsoft Azure, Ubuntu has rapidly become a preferred platform to harness that innovation.

But how can organizations balance the fast pace of community-driven open source innovation with their own imperatives of security, compliance and support? And what does an open source security strategy mean for enterprise environments?
