Learn about all things Kubeflow at Kubeflow Summit 2023

The Kubeflow community is meeting again this year to celebrate their success, learn from their users and discuss some of the challenges of the open source world in the MLOps context. Kubeflow Summit 2023 will take place on October 6 2023, in a hybrid format.  Attendees can join in person at Irving Convention Center or virtually.

What is Kubeflow?

For those who are not familiar with it yet, Kubeflow is an open source machine learning operations (MLOps) platform that is designed to develop and deploy models. It is a cloud-native application and it supports any environment, from private to public cloud, hybrid and multi-cloud scenarios. Read more about what is Kubeflow.

Charmed Kubeflow is one of the official distributions of the upstream project. It has the same capabilities as Kubeflow. Additionally, it benefits from other features, like integrations with MLflow, Grafana, Prometheus or Spark, extended support of Kubernetes versions and enterprise support. Read more about Charmed Kubeflow.

Kubeflow Community

Kubeflow enjoys support from a big community that consists of developers, data scientists, and machine learning engineers across all industries. Some of the notable milestones of the community include:

  • 28K+ GitHub Stars
  • 150+ companies contributing
  • 15K+ total committers
  • 55K+ total GitHub contributions
  • 9,000+ Slack Members
  • 15 releases since 2017

The community is organised into working groups and welcomes new members as contributors in all of them.

  • Notebooks Working Group builds an interactive development environment in Jupyter, VSCode and R-Studio notebooks, which speeds up model development and experimentation.
  • Training Operator Working Group develops Training Operator software to enable distributed ML training on Kubernetes.
  • AutoML Working Group develops automated model development software called Katib, which includes hyperparameter tuning and other model optimization features.
  • Kubeflow Pipelines Working Group develops software that converts Python ML scripts into stable workflow templates.
  • Manifests Working Group develops the installation process for Kubeflow, both for individual and all of Kubeflow’s components.
  • KServe Project develops a highly scalable and standards-based model inference platform on Kubernetes.

The community meets on a regular basis and \ gathers once a year in the Kubeflow Summit. Join the community’s Slack Workspace to learn more about it.

Kubeflow in CNCF

Big things happened in the Kubeflow community since the 2022 Kubeflow SUmmit. At the end of the last year, shortly after the previous edition of the summit, the project applied to join CNCF. In July 2023 the project was accepted by CNCF in the Incubation Stage. This is a huge milestone in the development of Kubeflow, which is a popular option among developers and enterprises. It marks community growth, improved security features as well as support from a wider organisation.

Kubeflow Summit 2023

Kubeflow Summit 2023 is going to address some of the challenges that CNCF already raised for the community. It is a great opportunity to align on some of the pressing issues, plan for the next release and give time to the working groups to work on their roadmaps.

The agenda includes talks from end users and software developers who are working on upstream projects. Companies such as Roche, RedHat, Google and Roblox have prepared talks.

“The 2023 Kubeflow Summit spotlights updates from leading code contributors and users, who are the driving force behind the project’s technical direction.   Their detailed talks will provide ML users and administrators with valuable insights into how the top MLOps enhancements are being addressed and how their associated efficiencies are being delivered.   This once-a-year event is a great place for users to sit with code developers and to build deeper understandings and relationships.”  –  Josh Bottum, Member of the Kubeflow Steering Committee.

Canonical at Kubeflow Summit

Canonical supported Kubeflow since its early days. We work closely with the community to contribute back to the upstream project. During the event, one of our engineers, Michal Hucko, will talk about the integration of Charmed Kubeflow with Charmed MLflow.

In addition, Daniela Plascencia will be talking about the latest release, Kubeflow 1.8, which she has been leading and Kimonas Sotirchos will present the latest news from two of the working groups in which he has been actively involved in.
