Ubuntu OpenStack continues to be the “go to” platform for enterprise scale out solutions, as Cisco releases its latest CVD (Cisco Validated Design), Hadoop as a Service (HaaS) with Cisco UCS Common Platform Architecture (CPA v2) for Big Data and OpenStack. Read this CVD to learn about setting up OpenStack on Ubuntu to deploy and manage Hadoop as a Service on Cisco UCS Common Platform Architecture version 2 (CPA v2). In this CVD, HortonWorks Data Platform (HDP 2.0), an enterprise-grade, Apache Hadoop distribution is used, to enable storing, processing, and managing large data sets across clusters of computers, helping to unlock value in big data while maximizing existing investments. This reference architecture uses Ubuntu as the host operating system and guest OS on Ubuntu OpenStack. Along with complete details for setting up “Hadoop as as Service” the CVD provides a bill of materials for the hardware and software. The 64 node configuration defined in this document can be expanded based on application requirements.
Cisco Systems and Canonical engineering teams have been doing great work over the past year to ensure our products work well together, enabling enterprise class networking for open source cloud environments and data center solutions designed for high availability, server redundancy, along with ease of deployment and use. As part of our joint efforts, Cisco participates in Canonical’s OpenStack Interoperability Lab (OIL) program, where an entire ecosystem of cloud infrastructure products, including Cisco Nexus 1000V Switch, are tested with Ubuntu OpenStack configurations. We currently are testing with over 3,000 combinations per month! Canonical also works closely with Cisco to certify a range of Cisco UCS (Unified Computing System) hardware solutions on Ubuntu. Check out the Cisco UCS certifications here.
In addition to the HaaS (Hadoop as a Service) with Ubuntu OpenStack CVD referenced above, here are some other recent examples of Cisco and Canonical collaboration, providing implementation guidelines for networking and data center solutions.
- Ubuntu OpenStack Architecture on Cisco UCS Platform, CVD, providing a clients with easy to use guidelines for integrating UCS with Ubuntu OpenStack.
- Network Virtualization Solutions for Ubuntu OpenStack Solution Overview, describes how Cisco and Canonical extend the network virtualization offered by the Cisco Nexus® 1000V Switch to Ubuntu OpenStack. This joint solution enables Cisco Nexus 1000V customers to bring enterprise-class networking to their open source cloud environments.
Ubuntu is the world’s most popular choice for OpenStack clouds, with over 50% of OpenStack clouds in production (as per recent OpenStack Foundation survey).
