Charmed PostgreSQL enters General Availability

An enterprise-grade PostgreSQL you can rely on

Jul 17, 2024: Today Canonical announced the release of Charmed PostgreSQL, an enterprise solution that helps you secure and automate the deployment, maintenance and upgrades of your PostgreSQL databases across private and public clouds.

PostgreSQL is an open source database management system. It has been successfully used for more than 3 decades across all IT sectors. Its maturity and its vibrant community consistently make it a first-choice DBMS among developers.

Canonical’s Charmed PostgreSQL builds on this foundation with additional capabilities to cover all your enterprise needs:

  • Up to 10 years of security maintenance and support
  • Advanced automation to simplify the management of your PostgreSQL fleet
  • Canonical-managed PostgreSQL service to reduce the burden on your team
  • Simple and predictable pricing model

Up to 10 years of security maintenance and support

Security and support for Charmed PostgreSQL can be purchased with an Ubuntu Pro subscription.  An Ubuntu Pro subscription provides up to 10 years of security maintenance not only for PostgreSQL server but also for some of the most popular extensions such as PostGIS, pgVector and pgAudit. You can also opt for 24/7 or weekday support. Conveniently, the subscription is priced per node, not per app. So users can benefit from a complete portfolio of data solutions with a predictable pricing model.

Automate your PostgreSQL operations

When you opt for Canonical’s Charmed PostgreSQL, you benefit from our expert-crafted operator that lets you run PostgreSQL on Azure, AWS and Google Cloud, whether on top of VMs or their managed Kubernetes offerings. You can also run PostgreSQL in your private data centre on top of MAAS and MicroCloud, OpenStack, Kubernetes or VMWare.

When using our operator, your PostgreSQL deployments will be:

  • Highly available with built-in replication and automatic failover.
  • Reliable with expert-crafted and self healing state-machine based automation.
  • Upgraded automatically during your maintenance windows and with minimum downtime.
  • Disaster recovery ready with built-in backup, restore and cluster-to-cluster replication capabilities to ensure business continuity.
  • Hybrid and multi-cloud ready with automation that supports deployment within and across private and public clouds.
  • Shipped with a holistic observability and alerting solution based on Prometheus, Loki and Grafana.

Self-managed or Canonical managed, your choice

Canonical adapts to your needs and constraints. You can opt for self-managed PostgreSQL operations while relying on our support, consultancy and training to ramp-up your team and back them up when needed. You can also offload management tasks related to your PostgreSQL servers to our experts for more peace of mind.
