Canonical
on 7 March 2023

Canonical is excited to announce it is now an official member of the Eclipse Software Defined Vehicle Working Group (SDV WG). Eclipse SDV focuses on software-defined vehicles (SDVs) and pushes innovations in automotive-grade solutions using open-source software. By offering an open technology platform, automotive companies can use and integrate open standards and powerful developer experience for their own software development.

“We are proud to be part of the Eclipse SDV Working Group and to contribute to the open-source community in such an exciting field. Enabling the best open-source software for the automotive industry will generate innovation and help develop new business opportunities”, said Bertrand Boisseau, Automotive Sector Lead at Canonical. “We believe that Canonical is in the best position to help the industry accelerate the shift towards software-defined vehicles that require simplified architectures, scalable software and cloud-native approaches”.

With almost 20 years of experience in open source and delivering Ubuntu, the most famous Linux distribution, Canonical will help define the automotive solutions of the future.

“We’re very pleased to have Canonical join the Eclipse SDV working group” says Mike Milinkovich, Executive Director of the Eclipse Foundation. “We are seeing tremendous momentum with our software-defined vehicle initiatives and rapid innovation that will drive the future of connected vehicles. It’s clear that this level of innovation and radical change in the automotive industry requires collaboration and a code-first approach and mindset. With Canonical’s expertise in offering meaningful software product and solutions on top of open source, along with their experience in building communities, we are happy to welcome them as a Supporting member of the Software Defined Vehicle Working Group”

Canonical in automotive

The next generations of vehicles will rely on cloud-native approaches. By helping companies leverage these solutions, Canonical is paving the way for software-defined vehicles. Ubuntu is one of the most trusted operating systems today, allowing for speed of development and deployment.

For use cases that require AI/ML computations and fast response time, Canonical provides real-time Ubuntu with a Linux kernel that integrates PREEMPT-RT, guaranteeing low-latency response time. With 10 years of security maintenance for Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVEs), Canonical is in a unique position to provide best-in-class software in a regular and reliable manner while leveraging state of the art over-the-air (OTA) updates.
